The official transition into the autumn season has arrived this week, bringing significant shifts in daylight and weather patterns. According to astronomical data, the autumn equinox occurs in the early hours of Wednesday at 01:06 BST. This precise moment marks when the Sun crosses the celestial equator, ensuring that neither the Northern nor the Southern Hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the Sun. Consequently, day and night experience a roughly equal duration worldwide.
The Science Behind Equinox and Equilux
While the word “equinox” translates from Latin to mean “equal night,” the exact balancing of light involves atmospheric science. During the equinox, daylight is measured from the moment the center of the Sun rests on the horizon. However, human visibility relies on the top edge of the Sun, which appears first at sunrise and remains visible last at sunset.
Because of light refraction—where the atmosphere bends solar rays—daylight lingers even when the Sun is technically below the horizon. This extra illumination shifts the true moment of equal day and night to a few days after the equinox, a phenomenon known as the equilux, meaning equal light. Depending on geographic latitude, this equalization occurs across regions toward the end of September.
Rapid Loss of Daylight and Weather Changes. Autumn Equinox 2026
As the autumn season progresses, the speed at which daylight fades varies by location. Regions situated further north experience a much sharper contrast between long summer days and upcoming winter darkness. Consequently, northern areas lose daylight at a significantly faster rate compared to southern regions.
Despite the astronomical shift marking the beginning of autumn, a sudden drop in temperature is not guaranteed immediately. While mean temperatures have hovered above average, changeable conditions are forecasted. Rainfall and cooler nights approaching the end of the month may introduce fresher atmospheric conditions and localized fog. BDUS News 24 will continue to provide the latest seasonal updates as autumn deepens.
