According to information shared by a police source with Reuters, the two American couples had planned to catch a flight departing from Athens airport at 3 p.m. on Friday, but they tragically never showed up. Belongings and identity documents recovered from the site by the Greek state broadcaster ERT and other local media confirmed their U.S. citizenship.

Suspected Cause and Extent of the Damage
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas stated that preliminary evaluations point toward a major gas leak as the primary cause of the powerful explosion. Local authorities immediately launched an intensive investigation following initial neighborhood reports regarding a strong smell of gas in the immediate area.
The force of the blast was immense, completely destroying the target building while causing extensive structural damage to adjacent homes, local shops, and parked vehicles. Debris, shattered glass, and building fragments were hurled up to three blocks away. Video footage from the scene revealed crushed cars beneath heavy falling masonry, with twisted metal and personal belongings scattered across the street.
The high-stakes search and rescue mission required the deployment of thirty firefighters, specialized search dogs, and advanced technological equipment like thermal sensors and cameras. Additionally, two women sustained injuries inside an adjacent building located on Lysikratous Street, highlighting the widespread impact of the disaster. Local community spaces, including a nearby church, also suffered structural impacts, forcing the local pastor to announce that upcoming Sunday services would be held outdoors.
