Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka did not enter the prestigious US Open with overly ambitious expectations this season, given the demanding challenges and fluctuating form she faced earlier in the year.
Although she ultimately fell short against Elena Rybakina in a hard-fought US Open final—a defeat that also cost her the world number one ranking—the talented athlete has openly admitted that her stellar run in New York far exceeded her own predictions.
This unexpected turn marked a unique milestone, as it meant Sabalenka had not secured a single Grand Slam singles title in a calendar season for the first time since 2022. However, her overall performance on the grand stage proved that her competitive edge remains sharper than ever.
Aryna Sabalenka Overcomes Adversity to Surprise Herself
Reflecting on her journey during her pre-tournament media session ahead of the upcoming China Open in Beijing, Sabalenka opened up about the grueling physical and mental hurdles she encountered following Wimbledon and throughout the North American hard court swing.
“I have to say that of course the end of the US Open was not the way I expected it to be, but I am still super proud of the work that has been done since the clay court season,” Sabalenka shared with reporters.
She further added that if anyone had told her right after Wimbledon that she would make it all the way to the final in New York, she simply would not have believed them due to her severe physical and mental exhaustion. Overcoming those barriers to rebuild her mindset is an achievement she takes immense pride in.
Looking Ahead to the China Open and Beyond
With the final Grand Slam behind her, Sabalenka now has only three tournaments left to contest before the conclusion of the 2026 tennis season. Her campaign resumes at the prestigious WTA 1000 event in Beijing, marking her fifth appearance at the tournament.
Although she has previously never advanced past the quarter-finals in Beijing, she carries strong positive memories from other Chinese events, having famously captured three titles at the Wuhan WTA 1000 tournament.
As the second seed in Beijing, Sabalenka has received an automatic bye directly into the second round, where she is set to face Renata Zarazua. Fans and analysts will undoubtedly be watching closely to see if she can maintain her momentum and potentially reclaim the world number one ranking before 2027.
