Road closures for 2026 Columbus Marathon for Oct. 16-18
The city of Columbus is bustling with energy as it hosts the much-anticipated annual marathon weekend, bringing more than 100,000 visitors, athletes, entertainers, and spectators into downtown streets. According to event organizers, official road closures for 2026 Columbus Marathon for Oct. 16-18 officially began on Friday morning and will remain in effect through Sunday evening to accommodate thousands of runners participating across various events.
Alongside the athletic competitions, the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) has issued advisories warning commuters and public transit riders to expect major delays and extensive route adjustments throughout the weekend.
Comprehensive Schedule of Weekend Events
The multi-day celebration kicked off with the Health and Fitness Expo held at Hall D of the Greater Columbus Convention Center, operating through Friday and Saturday. Saturday morning brought high-energy races starting from North Bank Park on West Long Street, including the Jesse Owens 5K, the Jesse Owens 1 Mile, and the popular White Castle Kids’ Run.
The main athletic showcase takes place on Sunday morning, featuring the wheelchair division followed promptly by the full marathon and half-marathon starting lines at North Bank Park. Thousands of dedicated runners are navigating the 26.2-mile course spanning across iconic neighborhoods in central Ohio.
Detailed Road Closures and Rolling Traffic Impacts
City officials and event coordinators have structured a phased traffic management plan to maintain order while minimizing disruption. On Friday, key segments near North Bank Park and Long Street were shut down, with specific exceptions made for inbound attendees heading to concerts and hockey games at the Nationwide Arena district.
As Sunday progresses, all 26.2 miles of the marathon route experience active rolling closures. Streets are systematically reopened by municipal safety crews immediately after the final participants clear each specific sector. Major thoroughfares such as Spring Street, Long Street, and Neil Avenue remain restricted until Sunday evening when normal traffic flow is officially restored.
COTA Transit Delays and Extensive Bus Reroutes
Public transportation users are heavily impacted by the weekend festivities. COTA announced that numerous transit lines are experiencing significant downtown reroutes. On Saturday, more than ten standard lines and the Zoo Bus faced temporary diversions during the morning hours.
Sunday brings even broader impacts, with approximately 18 transit lines affected across the morning and early afternoon blocks. Over 800 transit stops are temporarily closed throughout Downtown Columbus, German Village, Bexley, the Arena District, Short North, Victorian Village, Ohio State University, Grandview Heights, and Upper Arlington. Temporary transfer hubs have been established near Spring and Long Streets, supported by active transit supervisors to assist stranded commuters until normal operations resume following the conclusion of the marathon.
