Gary Myers established his legendary status through unmatched determination and dominance on the asphalt. Throughout his decades-long journey in motorsport, he accumulated an impressive 38 victories in Modified racing at Bowman Gray Stadium. Beyond local triumphs, his talent propelled him onto national platforms, featuring 47 appearances in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series—starting with his debut at the 1974 Yankee 400—alongside competing in the NASCAR Grand National East Series and the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour. Celebrating the Enduring Legacy of Gary Myers
In addition to his success in elite national divisions, Myers played an instrumental role in shaping the SMART Modified Tour. As one of the organization’s founding figures, he claimed the coveted SMART Modified Tour championship in 1996, securing 15 division wins. Racing was deeply rooted in the family heritage; his sons, Burt and Jason, as well as his grandson, Slate, successfully followed in his tire tracks to become celebrated championship drivers.
Tributes flooded in immediately from across the racing community. Representatives of Bowman Gray Stadium issued a touching statement of sorrow, offering heartfelt condolences to his wife, Pam, sons Burt and Jason, and grandson Slate. The SMART Modified Tour organization also remembered him warmly, declaring, “We lost one of our heroes”. Furthermore, his son Burt shared an emotional tribute online, noting, “Last night I lost my hero… He taught me everything I know. Selfishly I want him here but I know he is much better off now.
